The fashion world suffered another loss this week. A little over a month has gone by since the passing of Virgil Abloh, and now we mourn the loss Andre Leon Talley.
He didn’t grow up with the glitz and glam he was known for. He had a simple upbringing in Durham North Carolina.
He loved God, his church, his grandmother(and her biscuits) and fashion. In that order.
When I think of him I think of the picture above. Him clutching his iconic Louis Vuitton trunk.
As a young girl growing up in the south I shared his love of fashion.
I would save my allowance to purchase fashion magazines. His articles were so fun to read. His descriptions were sometimes over the top. And I fell in love with this larger than life persona.
He studied fashion with the incredibly talented Diane Vreeland, and they were a powerhouse in styling.
He was also mentored by Andy Warhol.
But his most memorable mentor was Anna Wintour. Although for the past few years there was a split due to his memoirs, they continued to speak highly of each other.
We also shared a fondness of writer Truman Capote.
We shared the desire to stand out, be different and do our own thing.
We were both country with a love of couture.
The front row of fashion shows will never be the same without him. But I will mentally save him a seat at every one.
